Lions & Tigers & Bears...

Last week I highlighted the worrying issue of heavy metals in some face paints and theatrical make-up products. As promised, here is the first of my follow-up posts (in plenty of time for halloween) on natural alternatives to conventional face paints.

Sante Face Paints

I utterly adore this face paint and am so excited to have finally sharing it with you - I have been saving it up for while, waiting for an apt time of year to post it!

Sante face paint is face paint with a difference; created without heavy metals and other toxic ingredients, using a combination of organically certified natural oils and waxes. The paints are great for sensitive skins - both young and old and I have worn it very close to my eyes without discomfort or irritation.

Housed in 6ml pots, the face paint has a smooth, creamy texture that blends like a dream. If you haven't used cream or grease based make-up before then it may take a bit of getting used to at first but once you get into the swing of it you will be blending and applying like a pro!

The paints can be applied neat using a brush or a sponge - I found that a dense cosmetics sponge (available in most Chemists and drugstores) worked better than the traditional porous face painting sponge. They can also be mixed with water to create a more translucent effect but in all honesty, I haven't found that this works particularly well and prefer to use the paints straight from the pot.

NB: In the interests of hygiene, if you are working with the paints in a professional or public capacity the consistancy of the paint means you can easily decant onto a palette.

There are eight colours available: black, white, red, blue, green, yellow, gold and silver (pictured below). The natural mineral pigments are really vibrant and don't loose their impact on longer wear. The number of colours is limited in comparison to conventional brands, however the creamy texture means that they are easy to mix so secondary (and other colours) can be produced relatively quickly. Being wax-based the paints don't dry and crack on in the skin but remain creamy so it is worth baring in mind that they will smudge if rubbed. To avoid smudging (as much as possible with little people) apply a light translucent powder to the skin after application; try Realist Setting powder from W3ll People or RMS Beauty Un Powder.

As with traditional face paints, the Sante paints are easy to remove either with a wet wipe or soap and water and there is very little by way of residue or staining - even with the green and red paints!

As the paints contain Beeswax they are not suitable for vegans however they are gluten free and like all Sante products they are both cruelty free and BDIH certified.

Priced at £32.95 for the full face painting set (all eight colours plus a sponge, two brushes, six face pencils and a sharpener - bargain!) or £3.95 individually from Sante UK. Sante UK currently have 25% and 50% off selected colours so get them whilst you can!
